Values

Values are core beliefs which
define what is right or wrong for an individual and eventually influences their
decisions. Values, as perceived by two people, communities or organizations may
differ from each other. They are things that an individual believes are of
value to him/her and considers them to be good or bad. These values very often
drive the decisions that are made by an individual because they are dependent
on the person’s choice. Sometimes there may be an emotional link to the values
as well. An individual may consider something to be right or wrong because
he/she has an emotional attachment in favour of or against something. Thus,
values are the core beliefs of a person which influences their decision making.
I, for instance, value honesty which may not be morally or ethically correct in
every situation and this exemplifies the difference between morals, values and
ethics.

Morals

Society defines morals based on what it thinks is good or bad, right
or wrong. Morals are more like defined standards that, as per society, need to
be followed by every individual. If these are violated then the individual is
morally wrong or immoral and as long as he/she is following these standards,
they are morally correct. An individual is generally judged by others based on
his/her morals and not their intrinsic values. Thus, contrary to values, morals
are more extrinsic to an individual’s beliefs and hence very different from
morals.

 

Ethics

Ethics is increasingly becoming more and more important in today’s
business environment. Ethics are similar to morals but are not defined by
society. Ethics are standards that are defined in a more professional setup
like an organisation or a formal group of people. Employees of an organization
are expected to follow the standards laid down by the organization irrespective
of their personal values or societies morals. An employee is expected to be
ethically correct while performing his/her daily tasks. Coming from a
healthcare background, I understand the importance of ethics in business.
Sharing of healthcare data in an un-encrypted form is unethical because such
data is extremely private to the patient. However, in times of extreme urgency,
one feels the urge to send data without encrypting it because the chance of it
getting leaked is almost zero. While this may be morally correct, it is
extremely unethical and this is just one example of the kind of ethical
dilemmas one might face in the workplace.

 

Conclusion

The three of them are interlinked
in some ways and also different in others. While values are more intrinsic to a
person, ethics and morals seem to be more extrinsic. Thus, we may be able to
categorise morals and ethics into one category. However, morals and ethics are
very different from one another in such a way that while morals are enforced
upon and individual by society, ethics are adopted by an individual when he/she
signs up to work for an organization. Thus, both are sets of standards defined
by very different groups of people.
